- From 1526 to 1867, there were 12.5 million captured people from Africa. - From those 12.5 million, only 10.7 million people arrived in America. - In the 1690's, there were 30,000 people per year taken from Africa. A century later, there were 85,000 people taken each year. - In 1850, for one European, it equaled about 4 African Americans. - 4 out of the 5 women who crossed the Atlantic were from Africa. - The average birth weight for a slave infant is 5.5 pounds when they are born. - During the Civil War, 180,000 African American men served in the Army and 29,000 served in the Navy. - Three-fifths of the African Americans that served in the military were enslaved before joining. - There are 49.6 million people are living in modern day slavery. 27.6 million people are forced into labor and 22 million people are forced into marriage. - From the 27.6 million people that are enslaved, 23.6 million are exploited and 3.9 million are in forced labor imposed by the state. - Women and girls make up around 4.9 million of sexual exploitation. - 12% of the people in forced labor are children. - The area with the most people in forced labor is Asia and the Pacific region. - For all of the people in slavery, a quarter of those people are children. Human Trafficking: The use of threats or violence to exploit people for things including labor and criminality.
Forced labor: Forced labor is when people are employed against their will to work for someone.
Forced marriage: Forced marriage is when people are forced to marry against their will or without their consent. They have no choice and are forced to stay in the marriage.
Domestic servitude: Is when a worker is not allowed to leave their employment. They are also abused and underpaid, or sometimes not paid at all.
Child slavery: Child slavery is when children are enslaved. They can be forced to work against their will and many more things.
Debt bondage: This is the most common form of slavery and affects about 50% of all the forced labor victims. Debt bondage is when you are forced to work because of a debt you own to another person. Even though many people are able to pay off their debt, they are kept in slavery and are unable to escape.
